How to merge PDF files on a Mac

By Last updated: 2 min readOrganize PDF

To merge PDFs on a Mac, select the files in Finder, Control-click and choose Quick Actions → Create PDF, or open the first file in Preview and drag the others into its thumbnail sidebar. For more control over page order, use Merge PDF in any browser: add the files, drag them into order and download one combined PDF — processed on your Mac, never uploaded.

Quick steps

  1. 1Open Merge PDF in your browser.
  2. 2Add the PDFs you want to combine.
  3. 3Drag them into the order you want.
  4. 4Click Merge and download the combined PDF.

Option 1: Finder Quick Action

In Finder, sort the files the way you want them combined, select them all, Control-click (or right-click) and choose Quick Actions → Create PDF. macOS writes a new PDF next to the originals, named after the first file.

If you don't see Create PDF, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Extensions → Finder and make sure it's enabled. The Quick Action combines whole files only; to drop or reorder single pages, use one of the options below.

Option 2: Preview

Open the first PDF in Preview and choose View → Thumbnails. Drag the other PDFs from Finder into the sidebar, dropping each where it should go — you can also drag individual pages up and down or press Delete to remove one.

Finish with File → Export as PDF to save the combined document as a new file. Saving in place overwrites the first PDF, so export a copy if you want to keep the original.

Option 3: Merge PDF in your browser

Open Merge PDF in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, add your files, drag them into the right order and download the result. It runs locally in the browser tab, so it's a good choice for confidential files and for Macs where you can't change settings.

To reorder pages across the merged result, open it in Organize PDF afterwards and drag the page thumbnails.

Frequently asked

Does merging in Preview reduce quality?
No. Preview and Merge PDF both copy the original pages into the new file without re-rendering them, so text and images are unchanged.
Can I merge PDFs on a Mac without Preview?
Yes. Use Finder's Create PDF Quick Action, or Merge PDF in any browser — neither needs Preview or extra software.
Are my files uploaded when I use Merge PDF?
No. PDFER processes the files inside your browser on the Mac itself; nothing is sent to a server.
