How to prepare a PDF for printing

Last updated: 2 min readEdit PDF

To get a PDF ready to print cleanly, rotate any sideways pages, set a consistent page size (Letter or A4) with Resize, drop color with Grayscale to save ink, and use Pages per Sheet to print several pages on one sheet. Each step runs in your browser.

Quick steps

  1. 1Rotate any sideways pages so they print upright.
  2. 2Use Resize to set a consistent page size (Letter or A4).
  3. 3Convert with Grayscale if printing in black and white.
  4. 4Use Pages per Sheet to fit multiple pages per page, then print.

Fix page orientation

If some pages are sideways — common with scans or inserted landscape pages — use Rotate so every page prints the right way up.

Normalize the page size

Mixed page sizes print unpredictably. Use Resize to set every page to a single size, such as Letter or A4, so the whole document prints consistently without unexpected scaling.

Save ink with grayscale

If you're printing in black and white, convert the file with Grayscale first so colored elements don't print as muddy grays — or choose “Print in grayscale” in your printer dialog to leave the PDF itself unchanged.

Fit more on each sheet

For handouts or to save paper, use Pages per Sheet (N-up) to place two, four, or more pages on a single sheet.

Private by design

Every one of these adjustments runs in your browser, so the document isn't uploaded to get it print-ready.

Frequently asked

How do I stop a PDF from printing at the wrong size?
Normalize every page to one size with Resize (e.g. Letter or A4), and set your printer to 100% / Actual size rather than “fit,” so nothing is scaled unexpectedly.
Should I convert to grayscale or just print in black and white?
If you want the file itself to be black and white, convert with Grayscale. If you only want this printout mono, use your printer's grayscale option and leave the PDF as-is.
How do I print multiple pages on one sheet?
Use Pages per Sheet to place 2, 4, or more pages on a single sheet before printing — useful for handouts and proofs.
Is the file uploaded while I prepare it?
No. Rotating, resizing, grayscale, and N-up all run in your browser, so the document stays on your device.
