Why did my PDF to Word conversion come out empty?
Last updated: 2 min readConvert from PDF
If converting a PDF to Word produced a blank or jumbled document, the source PDF is almost certainly a scan — images with no extractable text. Run OCR PDF first to add a real text layer, then convert again. If you only need the document to look right rather than be editable, use PDF to Word's “Exact look” mode, which keeps each page as an image.

Quick steps
- 1Check whether you can select text in the PDF; if not, it's a scan.
- 2Open OCR PDF, choose the language, and run it.
- 3Open PDF to Word and convert the OCR'd file in editable mode.
- 4Prefer a faithful copy over editable text? Use “Exact look” mode instead.
Why it happens
The editable PDF-to-Word mode extracts the document's text layer and reflows it into paragraphs. A scanned PDF has no text layer — just pictures of pages — so there is nothing to extract and the Word file comes out empty.
PDFER now warns you when a page has no selectable text, but the underlying cause is always the same: the source needs OCR first.
Fix: OCR, then convert
Open OCR PDF, pick the language, and run it to add a real text layer. Then open PDF to Word and convert the OCR'd file — the editable output will now contain the recognized text.
Alternative: use “Exact look” mode
If you just need a Word file that mirrors the original, choose PDF to Word's “Exact look” mode. It renders each page as an image inside the document, so it always produces a visible result — but the text is a picture, not editable paragraphs.
If text is there but messy
When the text comes through but columns, tables, or spacing look off, that's layout reconstruction, not a conversion failure — complex page designs are simplified when reflowed into Word. Lightly editing the result is normal.

Frequently asked
- Why is my converted Word document blank?
- The PDF is a scan with no text layer, so the editable conversion found nothing to extract. Run OCR first, then convert again.
- Why is the text jumbled or out of order?
- Heavily designed pages — multiple columns, tables, text boxes — are simplified when reflowed into Word. The words are correct; the layout is approximated.
- Which mode should I use?
- Use editable mode when you need to change the text (after OCR if it's a scan). Use “Exact look” when you just need a Word file that matches the original's appearance.
- Is the file uploaded during conversion?
- No. OCR and PDF-to-Word both run in your browser, so the document stays on your device.
