Compress PDF to 100 KB: how it works

To compress a PDF to 100 KB, add it to the tool above — the target is preset to 100 KB — and click Compress PDF. PDFER re-renders the pages at lower resolution until the file fits, entirely on your device. 100 KB is a very tight limit, so it works best for one- to three-page documents such as an ID scan, a certificate or a signed form.

Updated

Compress PDF to 100 KB, step by step

  1. Add your PDF to the tool above — “To target size” is already set to 100 KB.
  2. Adjust the target if your form's limit is different.
  3. Click Compress PDF and wait while PDFER tries progressively stronger settings on your device.
  4. Check the final size shown with the download, then save the PDF.

Where you'll see a 100 KB limit

Online application portals — exams, government services, scholarship and job forms — often cap supporting documents at 50–100 KB per file, sometimes alongside a separate photo and signature limit. They want small, single-purpose files: one page for the ID, one page for the certificate.

What a 100 KB PDF looks like

In “To target size” mode PDFER renders each page to an image and re-encodes it at progressively lower resolution and JPEG quality, stopping at the best-looking version that fits under your limit. If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it could make. At 100 KB a single page of text stays readable; a full-colour photo page will look soft. Each extra page shares the same 100 KB budget, so quality drops quickly beyond a few pages.

If it won't get under 100 KB

Remove pages the form doesn't need with Remove Pages, convert to black and white with Grayscale PDF (colour costs bytes), or split the document and upload each part separately if the form allows it. Then run the compressor again.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages can fit in 100 KB?

Usually one to three pages of a scanned document at readable quality. Text-only pages compress better than photos; a ten-page colour scan generally cannot reach 100 KB and still be legible.

Will the text still be selectable?

No — target-size compression turns pages into images, so text can no longer be selected or searched. If you need selectable text and the file is only slightly over the limit, try the Recommended level on the main Compress PDF tool first, or run OCR PDF on the compressed result.

Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser tab; the file is never sent to PDFER or anyone else and is erased from memory when you leave the page. That matters for the ID scans, payslips and certificates that size-limited forms usually ask for.
