All Optimize PDF →Compress PDF to 500 KB: how it works
To compress a PDF to 500 KB, add it to the tool above — the target is preset to 500 KB — and click Compress PDF. PDFER re-encodes the pages in your browser until the file is under 500 KB. That is enough for roughly five to fifteen scanned pages at good quality, such as a bank statement, a contract or a portfolio sample.

Compress PDF to 500 KB, step by step
- Add your PDF to the tool above — “To target size” is already set to 500 KB.
- Adjust the target if your form's limit is different.
- Click Compress PDF and wait while PDFER tries progressively stronger settings on your device.
- Check the final size shown with the download, then save the PDF.
When 500 KB is the limit
Tax, insurance and court e-filing systems, landlord and HR portals, and many support-ticket forms cap attachments around 500 KB. It's also a sensible size for sending a document over a messaging app on a slow connection.
Try the lossless levels first
If your PDF is only a little over 500 KB, the Recommended level on the main Compress PDF tool may get it there while keeping text selectable — it only shrinks oversized images. Switch to target size when you need a guaranteed result. In “To target size” mode PDFER renders each page to an image and re-encodes it at progressively lower resolution and JPEG quality, stopping at the best-looking version that fits under your limit. If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it could make.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my compressed PDF still larger than 500 KB?
- Very long or photo-heavy documents can't always fit at the lowest quality rung. PDFER then returns the smallest version it produced. Remove pages you don't need or split the PDF into parts and compress each one.
Will the text still be selectable?
- No — target-size compression turns pages into images, so text can no longer be selected or searched. If you need selectable text and the file is only slightly over the limit, try the Recommended level on the main Compress PDF tool first, or run OCR PDF on the compressed result.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
- No. Compression runs entirely in your browser tab; the file is never sent to PDFER or anyone else and is erased from memory when you leave the page. That matters for the ID scans, payslips and certificates that size-limited forms usually ask for.
