All Optimize PDF →Compress PDF to 200 KB: how it works
To compress a PDF to 200 KB, drop it into the tool above — the target is already 200 KB — and click Compress PDF. PDFER lowers image resolution and quality step by step until the file fits, all in your browser. 200 KB comfortably fits a few scanned pages, such as a multi-page certificate or a short signed letter.

Compress PDF to 200 KB, step by step
- Add your PDF to the tool above — “To target size” is already set to 200 KB.
- Adjust the target if your form's limit is different.
- Click Compress PDF and wait while PDFER tries progressively stronger settings on your device.
- Check the final size shown with the download, then save the PDF.
Common reasons for a 200 KB limit
Recruitment sites, university admissions and visa or residency portals frequently set 200 KB as the per-document maximum for things like mark sheets, proof of address or experience letters. Some list it as “0.2 MB”.
Quality at 200 KB
In “To target size” mode PDFER renders each page to an image and re-encodes it at progressively lower resolution and JPEG quality, stopping at the best-looking version that fits under your limit. If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it could make. Two to five scanned pages typically remain clearly readable at 200 KB. Photos and colour backgrounds use most of the budget, so a black-and-white scan looks noticeably sharper at the same size.
Tips for a sharper result
Crop away scanner borders with Crop PDF, drop blank or unnecessary pages, and convert colour scans to grayscale before compressing. Every byte you remove first goes into better image quality for the pages that remain.
Frequently asked questions
Is 200 KB the same as 0.2 MB?
- Roughly. Forms usually mean 200 × 1,024 bytes (204,800 bytes) — PDFER uses the same definition, so a file under its 200 KB target also passes a “0.2 MB” check.
Will the text still be selectable?
- No — target-size compression turns pages into images, so text can no longer be selected or searched. If you need selectable text and the file is only slightly over the limit, try the Recommended level on the main Compress PDF tool first, or run OCR PDF on the compressed result.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
- No. Compression runs entirely in your browser tab; the file is never sent to PDFER or anyone else and is erased from memory when you leave the page. That matters for the ID scans, payslips and certificates that size-limited forms usually ask for.
