All Optimize PDF →Compress PDF to 1 MB: how it works
To compress a PDF to 1 MB, add it to the tool above — the target is preset to 1,024 KB — and click Compress PDF. PDFER shrinks it in your browser until it is under 1 MB, which keeps scanned documents of a few dozen pages, or a slide deck exported to PDF, comfortably readable.
Updated
Compress PDF to 1 MB, step by step
- Add your PDF to the tool above — “To target size” is already set to 1 MB.
- Adjust the target if your form's limit is different.
- Click Compress PDF and wait while PDFER tries progressively stronger settings on your device.
- Check the final size shown with the download, then save the PDF.
Why 1 MB is such a common limit
Job applications and applicant-tracking systems, school and university portals, and many government forms set 1 MB as a per-file maximum for CVs, transcripts and supporting documents. It is also a polite size for e-mail attachments that will be opened on phones.
Keeping text selectable at 1 MB
A CV or text-based report exported from Word is usually far below 1 MB already; if it isn't, embedded photos are the cause and the Recommended level on Compress PDF will usually fix it without turning text into images — which matters because applicant-tracking systems read the text. Use target size for scans. In “To target size” mode PDFER renders each page to an image and re-encodes it at progressively lower resolution and JPEG quality, stopping at the best-looking version that fits under your limit. If nothing fits, you get the smallest version it could make.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use target size for my CV?
- Usually not. Target-size compression turns pages into images, and applicant-tracking systems need real text to parse your CV. Try the Recommended level on Compress PDF first; it shrinks photos but keeps text selectable.
Will the text still be selectable?
- No — target-size compression turns pages into images, so text can no longer be selected or searched. If you need selectable text and the file is only slightly over the limit, try the Recommended level on the main Compress PDF tool first, or run OCR PDF on the compressed result.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
- No. Compression runs entirely in your browser tab; the file is never sent to PDFER or anyone else and is erased from memory when you leave the page. That matters for the ID scans, payslips and certificates that size-limited forms usually ask for.
